Katharine McPhee Unbroken

Katharine McPhee is back with her sophomore effort Unbroken released January 5, 2010. This album comes 3 years after her self-titled debut album was released. Katharine is back with strong vocals and catchy lyrics that draw you in and make you want to continue listening. This album is a little different for Katharine. Her debut album had a mix of pop and R&B sounds flowing through it. Unbroken seems a little more grown up for Katharine with more of a laid back mature sound. The melodies are very smooth and easy to take. She co-wrote 6 out of 13 songs on Unbroken along with American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi who also contributed. Unbroken is a great album and a really easy listen, I find myself hitting repeat on multiple tracks. Unbroken has fun, sexy, heartbreaking, and happy lyrics on it giving the listener more than one story. Her voice is so pure and mature that you find yourself closing your eyes and just taking in Katharine. Being a lover of music I have a lot of respect for this album, it doesn’t seem rushed and forced. It’s a very natural and easy flowing album from start to finish. I really hope this album gets more popular over time because it deserves a fair chance to sell.

The first single on Unbroken is “Had it all,” a pop meets county song. It’s a different sound for her and I like the direction of the song. I think her duet with Jason Reeves , “Terrified,” should be her second single. I think it would be a big hit for Katharine, it screams radio hit, and that acoustic mid tempo sound is pretty popular right now. “Terrified” sounds a lot like a Jason Reeves and Colbie Caillat collaboration. It has that magic free flowing feel to it. There are more stand-out tracks on Unbroken. “Last Letter” is a fun song about using the guy to write a song and then getting over him; “Surrender,” a love ballad that’s very catchy and beautifully written; and “Say Goodbye” is a gloomy ballad that makes you feel so sad and alone but makes you listen again. Katharine really sounds so amazing on this track. “It’s not right” is a really enjoyable track that’s fun to sing along with. On the title track “Unbroken” you can feel the pain of the song; it’s a very deep and depressing. I’m a sucker for a sad love song so I adapt to the slower tracks on this album. Overall this is a great album with many different feelings and emotions. Her voice is so angelic and pure on this album. I can play this album start to finish and be very happy. I give Unbroken 4/5 stars. Good job Katharine McPhee.

Whitney Houston - I Look To You

Whitney Houston is back with her new album I Look to You which hit stores this past Monday, her first album in 7 years. I Look to You is a mix of R&B slow jams and over -the -top ballads about finding her way back to the top. The title track is the album’s first single, which got lukewarm reviews. Houston took a very safe approach with this album, making sure not to talk about her divorce from Bobby Brown or her drug usage. Houston has a lot riding on this album from all the negative publicity surrounding her. Houston turned to a number of A-list producers and writers on this album from Alicia Keys, R Kelly, Akon, to Swizz Beatz among others. The 12 track disk is a reminder why we turn to Whitney for good music.

The Whitney from the 90’s is gone and the new R&B Whitney is here with a new sound and style of music. The album starts with “Million Dollar Bill” which was produced by Alicia Keys, and is Houston’s second single. The video is scheduled to be released in the coming weeks. The song has a very old-school-vibe and is definitely for the dance floor. The album moves to the next track “Nothin’ But Love” where Houston calls out the people that have wronged her telling them that she “aint got nothing but love for them”. It’s a fan favorite on the album and has a positive message behind it. “Call You Tonight” is a laid back R&B track with a very chill vibe to it. This may be my favorite track off the album, making me move my head and press repeat after it’s over. “Like I Never Left” features Akon and is a good mix of breezy beats and catchy lyrics. Houston tells us that she wants us to love her like she never left. The song gives a very summery feel and would make a great next single off the album. “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” has Houston singing will all her heart, telling us that she wasn’t built to break and she got to know her own strength.

The next few tracks are all about the lovers and being happy in a relationship. “Worth it”, “For the Lovers”, and “I Got You” are all about being with that special someone and just being in love. I like this part of the album, Houston seems to be a little more free and is having fun delivering the songs. This part of the album is definitely for anyone that is happy in love, or anyone that wants to be in love. On “For the Lovers” Houston tells us straight out that “the next three minutes are about the lovers”. The mid-tempo jams alone are worth buying the album for. Houston delivers again on “I Got You” another Akon produced track. The mid-tempo jam has you moving your body and wanting to sing along.

Although the album is a nice effort from Houston, when the album is finished it leaves you feeling incomplete, and wanting more. Maybe that was Houston’s plan and her next album will fill in the missing pieces from this one. The world wants to know if the voice is back and if Whitney can once again be on top. No doubt that she will be back on top, but the voice is not what it once was. Case in point on the titular track she hits some not-so-flattering notes. She doesn’t do a lot vocally on this album mainly using her lower register. The album is a good album, but not great with nothing exceptional. It’s just an above average R&B album that any artist could do with the right producers. After being away for so long I was hoping for an amazing album with all the bells and whistles. All I can say is welcome back Whitney even though I wanted more from you it’s still a good album. I Look to You gets 3.5/5 Stars.

Mariah Carey "I Want To Know What Love Is "

Mariah Carey just revealed the official cover art for her new single "I Want To Know What Love Is". The song is a remake from the band Foreigner and was originally done back in 1984. Carey adds a new sounds and format to the song. In fact she shorten the song and added a gospel choir. It gives a new feel to the song which takes away from the cheesy 80's version. "I Want To Know What Love is" is Carey's second single from her new album "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel" in stores September 29, 2009.

"I Want To know What Love Is" has Carey singing her heart out in the ballad, trying to make us feel the depth of the song. The song is not what i would have chosen for Mariah to release as a follow up single to her hit "Obsessed". The song is laking something that I can't put my finger on yet. Although the song is a better version than the original, it still doesn't need to be the next single for her. Carey made her massive return to music with her 2005 "The Emancipation of Mimi" album, which was a huge hit for her with over 9 million copies sold world wide. After that came her album "E=MC2" which gave her the 18th number 1 single "Touch My Body", and put her pass Elvis with most number hits by an artist. Mariah had luke warm responds with the rest of the singles off that album.

Carey is counting on this new album to bring her big numbers and more hits to add under her belt. Her yet to be released album "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel" is going to be a big deal for Carey, and she needs this to be a success for her. Don't get me wrong "What Love Is" has potential, its just not the direction i want to see her go with the next single. I have followed Mariah's career since the beginning with all the ups and downs, and i just don't want another "flop" from her. I am excited to see what she has up her sleeve with this album. Carey will be on Oprah Friday September 18th to perform and give a sit down interview. I give "I Want To Know What Love Is" 3/5 stars.
